KitKat Ruby Review (Ruby Choclate, Pink Chocolate) (Food Review)
Today I am bringing you a quick review of the new KitKat
Ruby which was released fairly recently in the UK. Ruby chocolate is the
current ‘it thing’ in the confectionary industry, with high end brands such as
Prestat and Fortnum and Mason developing their own products using this fascinating
new ingredient. Admittedly, KitKat was not on my shortlist of where we would
see ruby chocolate pop up next, but I like that the KitKat Ruby provides a more
accessible way for the masses to get a taste of this fancy new confection.
Ruby chocolate is being marketed as “the fourth type of
chocolate” alongside the old guard of dark, milk and white. Supposedly no colourings
or flavours are added to ruby chocolate, but rather its unusual properties are
all naturally occurring using the “newly discovered Ruby cocoa bean”. There
seems to be some mystery surrounding the specifics of how ruby chocolate is
actually created with somewhat elusive talk of an “innovative process” and “unique
processing” with no other real details forthcoming. Some commentators are sceptical
of the whole thing, claiming that ruby is in fact not some newly discovered
wonder-chocolate but instead is simply a very clever marketing tool to appeal
to self-indulgent millennials. With all this aside, let’s get on to the review…
The first thing that struck me was the packaging. I love it!
The cherry blossom pink colour scheme is lovely and overall the packaging seems
very luxurious. You get the feeling that this is no ordinary KitKat, and that you
are getting something a bit special. I don’t know if it comes across in the
pictures, but the little Ruby cocoa bean on the front of the wrapper is a kind
of metallic holograph which I think is a nice touch.
Upon opening the packaging, I could tell that the ruby chocolate
covering the KitKat did have a very definite pink colour. As someone who is
always on the hunt for different or unusual products, I think that this fits
the bill and I just thought it looked really cool.
So, what about the taste? The ruby chocolate has a very
apparent fruity/ berry taste. It has a tangy, almost tart, taste to it but still
has a lot of sweetness. It doesn’t really taste like any other chocolate but would
probably be most comparable to white chocolate but with a fruit flavour. Inside
tastes like a normal KitKat with the classic wafer biscuits and chocolate
layers – can’t really go wrong with that!
Overall, I really enjoyed the Ruby KitKat and thought it
tasted great. I adored the packaging and it made me feel like I was experiencing
a little bit of luxury.
But is ruby chocolate truly just a clever advertising ploy
rather than an impressive new culinary discovery? Frankly, I don’t really care.
I think it’s really interesting and offers something different
from dark, milk or white chocolate. I like that it is so unusual and seems like something a bit special. If it truly is just a devious marketing trick, I’m willing to admit I have definitely fallen for it. But then
again, maybe I’m just a self-indulgent millennial…
My rating: 8.5/10
