New Subway Signature Wraps (Food Review)
Today’s review is for the recently released ‘Signature
Loaded Wraps’ from Subway. On a somewhat pedantic note, the name strikes me as
being slightly odd. Can a new item really be classed being ‘signature’? Surely
this implies a well-established product for which a brand is widely known? To
call something ‘new’ and ‘signature’ simultaneously seems to be a bit of an
oxymoron, but I digress…
So, what do Subway have on offer for us then? There are
three flavours available: Turkey, Bacon & Guacamole, Rotisserie-Style
Chicken Caesar, and Chipotle Southwest Steak & Cheese. I tried the two
former flavours so can only comment on those first hand. I was looking forward
to trying these as I do enjoy a Subway sandwich every now and again and was intrigued
to try something different from them. They looked appealing on the
advertisements and I had high hopes. You can see the promotional image above. I'll include my own pictures for comparison and you can decide how accurate you think the advert is. I was planning on getting the chicken one while
my sister chose the turkey and bacon. The wraps come in two halves, so we decided
to share which allowed us to try both.
I’ll start with my first choice, the Rotisserie-Style Chicken
Caesar, which is described on their website as “A
spinach wrap crammed with 100% hand-torn chicken breast, Italian hard cheese,
tomato, lettuce & Caesar sauce.”
I really liked the sound of the spinach wrap and have previously had Marks and Sparks versions which I have enjoyed. The wrap itself tasted fine, though I didn’t really get any distinct spinach-y flavour from it which was a bit disappointing. The filling, I have to say, left me cold. The whole thing just tasted a bit… for lack of a better word… odd, to me. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was, but something just tasted a bit weird. I’m pretty sure the main culprit was the chicken. It is noted on the site that the chicken is “hand torn in-store, 100% chicken breast marinated, seared and cooked in its own juices.” The texture was fine and seemed to be what you would normally expect from chicken breast, but the flavour just seemed to be a bit off to my palette. My best guess is that it has something to do with those juices they’re talking about, and perhaps the way it is cooked or marinated. It was *hella salty and I found it very hard to get through. The taste wasn’t horrible but not entirely pleasing either. The ‘Italian hard cheese’ tasted like bog-standard grated cheese, nothing special at all. The lettuce and cubed tomato was fine, I guess. What can really be said about lettuce and tomato? I had honestly kind of forgotten that it was meant to be Caesar as I didn’t get a strong sense of that flavour at all.

I probably enjoyed the Turkey, Bacon & Guacamole slightly
more, even though it wasn’t my first choice. On the site, it is advertised as “A tomato & basil wrap packed with turkey breast, streaky
bacon, American style cheese, guacamole & Ranch sauce.”
Again, the tomato and basil wrap sounded right up my street but failed to deliver any identifiable flavour. For both this one and the spinach one, if I hadn’t known the favours prior to eating them, I wouldn’t have guessed either. As for the filling, there was a fair amount of turkey. Both the turkey and the bacon were OK but, once again, nothing exciting. So we have ‘American style cheese’ this time, apparently. Did it taste any different to the Italian hard cheese in the previous wrap? That’s a big ole' nope from me. It tasted like the exact same, completely ordinary, grated cheese as before. This one also had some salad ingredients that I can’t really remember. Again, standard stuff. Could have done with a bit more guacamole, and the Ranch sauce was not very noticeable. This one was pretty salty as well and I felt like it needed either more of some ingredients, or something else added to lift it a bit and give it a more balanced taste. I would have liked something fresher to cut through the heavy meat and cheese taste.

I didn’t try the Chipotle Southwest
Steak & Cheese but have been advised by someone who has that it wasn’t any
better. So, all in all, very disappointed by these. I was looking forward to giving
these a go and they sounded promising, but they were very much a let down for
me. I’m glad I split two different flavours with my sister as I don’t think I could
have eaten a whole one of either. I found them very tough-going and had to take
a break after eating the first one. It was worth trying them once but I won’t be
buying any more. I could have (and indeed have) made a much tastier wrap at home with
more quality tasting ingredients. But remember, these are just my opinions, we
all have different tastes and hey, you might love them. So, Subway, I'm still a fan of your sandwiches and cookies but not your wraps, I'm afraid.
Have you given them a go
yet? If you have, what did you think? If you haven’t, do you want to, and which
one would you choose?
