Hoisin Duck Sushi Wrap – Marks and Spencer (Food Review)

I thought I’d do a quick review of a (relatively) new product from Marks and Spencer– their sushi wraps. I will be reviewing the Hoisin duck sushi wrap but there is also a tuna variety available if that’s more your thing.

I’m always on the search for something new or a bit unusual so I have to say I was pretty excited when I saw these in the shop. I am a fan of M&S sushi and I also really like their Hoisin duck wraps (normal wraps, that is) so putting these two together gets a thumbs up from me.
It actually took me a while to get my hands on one of these as my local M&S don’t seem to be stocking them. I did see them only once but as they were all expiring the next day, I was a little reluctant to pay full price. I planned to either wait until they got ones with better dates in or maybe snag a yellow stickered one the following day. But, alas, they have never been seen again. The ticket has been removed so it looks very unlikely that they’ll ever be back. Anyway, I did eventually manage to find them on my travels to the big city where the stores have a wider selection than my local store.

OK, so onto the review. What’s in it? The ‘wrap’ part, as you’d probably imagine with sushi, is made of rice. There are sesame seeds and chives on the outside and there is a thin sheet of seaweed on the inside of the rice. The filling consists of shredded roast duck in hoisin sauce along with pickled carrots, cucumber and red peppers.

The wrap does have the traditional taste of sushi with the rice and seaweed but offers something a little different with the duck filling. There is a nice combination of textures and flavours which I think work really well together. The hoisin duck has a pleasant sweetness to it which is complimented by the freshness of the cucumber and red pepper. The subtly pickled flavour of the carrots cuts through the sweetness to balance the flavours. The sesame seeds and chives give a bit of extra flavour and help to make the product look more visually appealing. The only slight negative I encountered was that it became a tad tricky to eat at certain points as the rice started to break up a little bit. This wasn’t a big deal though and didn’t affect my enjoyment of the product. I should note that I tried a second wrap which stayed together much better, so perhaps I was just a bit unlucky with my first one.

As you would expect from an M&S product, it definitely tastes like high quality ingredients have been used. The duck in particular is excellent and everything else is great as well. The sushi wrap is nice and light but is still relatively filling. It would be ideal for a light lunch or a snack. One wrap only has 158 calories and it is part of M&S’s ‘Eat Well’ range. It contains 2.6g of fat, 0.6g saturated fat, 26.4g of carbohydrates, 4.9g of sugars, 1.4g of fibre, 6.7g of protein and 1.15g of salt.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend for people who enjoy sushi or duck, and those looking for a light meal or a snack which is a healthier option but still super tasty.
